Active Stirling's Curling Programme for adults has various options depending on your experience. See our progression chart below.
If you have never tried the ancient sport of curling before we would recommend our Try Curling class. If you want to learn more about the sport then we have our Beginners class which is a 4 week block of lessons designed to further enhance your curling skills.
For those who have completed the Beginners Curling class and want to continue then our Gateway Class is ideal. This weekly class builds up to playing competitive matches and is perfect if you want to curl for one of our Curling Clubs based at The PEAK.
What's included in our classes?
- Perfect class to learn the basics of Curling.
- Fun, relaxed coaching.
- Safety: How to move safely on the ice.
- Delivering the stone: the technique of sliding the polished granite stones down the ice towards the target (house).
- Sweeping: Sweeping the ice in front of the stone to influence its speed and direction.
- Practice: You’ll have a chance to practice both delivering the stones and sweeping the ice.
- Perfect class to learn more about the ancient sport of Curling.
- Coaching from Scottish Curling qualified coaches.
- A recap of Try Curling.
- Safety: How to safely slide down the ice and handle the curling stones.
- The Equipment: Learn about the different curling equipment, including curling shoes, brooms and stones.
- The rules of Curling: Understand the scoring system, how to deliver the stone and different types of shots in curling.
- Basic Delivery technique: How to hold the stone, slide down the ice and release the stone.
- Sweeping: Learn how to sweep the ice to control the stone.
- Strategy: Learn some basic curling strategy, such as how to guard your stones and score points.
- Fun: Fun coaching games and activities.
- Perfect class if you have completed our Beginners class or if you have curled before and want to get back into the game.
- Coaching by qualified Scottish Curling Coaches.
- Master Delivery Technique: Perfecting the slide, grip and release for increased accuracy and power.
- Advanced Sweeping Techniques: Different sweeping strategies to influence the path of the stone.
- Curling Strategy and Tactics: Delve deeper into strategic shot selection, understanding ice conditions and reading the game.
- Teamwork & Communication: Learning effective strategy and preparing for competitive games.
Our NEW PEAK Development League is perfect for curlers who are in our Gateway Club or are new to curling and want to play in competitive in a fun and relaxed environment.
- Warm, loose fitting clothing
- Tracksuit bottoms/joggers/leggings
- Warm jumpers (hoodie)
- Gloves (If you think you’ll be cold)
- On the feet – clean, flat, rubber soled shoes (trainers are ideal) to change into for curling
All equipment is supplied by The PEAK including:
- Brushes
- Delivery aids
- Sliders
- Ice can be very slippery – always wear two flat rubber soled shoes on ice
- Make sure your footwear is totally clean – tiny pieces of dirt can spoil the ice surface
- If a stone goes astray shout ICE to allow others to look out
- Use your brush to stop and move the stones – not your feet
- DO NOT try and lift the 22KG stones
- Always keep your feet on the ice
- Walk or slide NEVER hop or run
- If you have an injury on the ice please report to our Ice Technician on site, Coach or at The PEAK reception
