Fit for Girls is a national programme created in partnership between sportscotland and the Youth Sport Trust. Since 2008, it has continuously developed to meet the needs of girls and the sport and physical activity workforce in Scotland.

Through collaboration, education, and encouragement, we aim to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and inspire lasting positive change in the lives of women and girls across Stirling.

Key Principles of Fit for Girls are:
  • Valuing girls’ voices: Impact on girls - “I have a voice in the decisions that affect me.”
  • Promoting peer role models: Impact on girls - “I see and hear from other girls like me.”
  • Co-creating projects: Impact on girls - “I can find opportunities that meet my needs.”
  • Celebrating ‘Unstoppable Girls’: Impact on girls - “I feel like taking part is for me.”

Join us as our Active Schools Co-ordinator, Grace Morrison, shares how the Fit For Girls programme will inspire and support young girls, helping them build confidence, resilience, and ensuring equal opportunities for girls all over Scotland.

How will Active Stirling support Fit for Girls?

Our team, in collaboration with sportscotland, is excited to deliver a series of workshops throughout the year. These workshops aim to equip you with the resources and tools needed to make a positive impact and create inclusive opportunities within the Stirling community.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to co-deliver various events and celebrations, including Active Girls Week in October and Women and Girls Week in February.

Your Role

As a Fit For Girls ambassador, you'll play a key part in encouraging and supporting girls in your school, sports clubs, and the wider community. To help you along the way, we've put together some short videos from current students and ambassadors. In each video, they share helpful tips, creative ideas, and ways you can inspire more girls to get involved in sports and physical activities.

Celebrate Active Girls Week and join a sports committee. Help us identify barriers and promote greater achievements for all. Together, we can:

  • Expand opportunities for girls and young women to participate in sport and physical activities.
  • Improve access to leadership roles for girls and young women in school and community sports.
  • Increase recognition of girls' ability to inspire and motivate their peers, providing more opportunities to do so.
  • Enhance the knowledge and understanding of those delivering PE, sports, and physical activities to girls and young women.

Celebrate Women and Girls Month by creating safe spaces for girls to get active and connect. Together, we can:

  • Showcase their achievements in sports by promoting them on social media, through school channels, and within your communities.
  • Inspire girls to achieve new goals by hearing from role models who encourage them to stay active.
  • Use your sports committee and fresh ideas to create fun and personalised opportunities for girls to get active in schools and communities.

Our Sports Committee, will reflect on the sports and activities delivered and help support and recruit new members to keep growing and improving active lifestyles for girls. Together, we can:

Reflection

  • Gather feedback from participants to understand what’s working well and where we can improve.
  • After events, we’ll discuss our successes and challenges together.
  • With our committee and Active Schools Co-ordinator, we’ll review participation data to spot trends and find opportunities for growth.
  • We’ll always celebrate our achievements and use our experiences to make our programmes even better.

Recruiting

  • We’ll connect with potential members through school announcements and newsletters.
  • Hosting information sessions will help us share our mission and activities with interested students.
  • We’ll use social media to highlight our successes and attract more girls to join us.
  • We’ll encourage girls to bring along friends and peers who might be interested.
  • By working with teachers and coaches, we’ll identify students who could be a great fit for our committee.
